Review sources • Google Business Profile (Free, available now) via the official Places API (New) • Manual/custom reviews (Pro, available now) — merged with Google automatically • Trustpilot, JED, Facebook, Yelp, Tripadvisor & more — on the short-term roadmap, one widget for everything Display • 3 Free layouts (Cards, List, Basic carousel) + rating summary with review schema; Pro adds Masonry, Testimonial, Badge • Show reviews anywhere: module position, {murureviews} shortcode, full-page menu item, or the native SP Page Builder addon — all reading the same cached data • Filters (rating, keyword, source), responsive design, Google attribution included Pro edition adds manual reviews, extra layouts and filters, scheduled refresh down the line, a licensed update feed, and priority support. Requirements: Joomla 5 or 6, PHP 8.1+. Works with any template, with a dedicated addon for SP Page Builder 4 & 5.26:T753,

MuRu Reviews installs like any standard Joomla extension. One bundle zip contains everything: the component, the module, the shortcode plugin, and the SP Page Builder addon.

Requirements

Joomla 5 or 6 -- native extension, no backwards-compatibility plugin needed.
PHP 8.1 or newer. The installer refuses older versions with a clear message instead of half-installing.
SP Page Builder 4, 5, or 6 -- only if you want the page-builder addon. The module, shortcode, and menu page work without it.
A Google Places API (New) key -- covered in Connect Your Google Business Profile.

Install in 2 minutes

In the Joomla admin go to System > Install > Extensions and upload pkg_murureviews-X.Y.Z.zip.
Go to System > Manage > Plugins, search "MuRu Reviews", and enable the content shortcode plugin and the SP Page Builder plugin.
Open Components > MuRu Reviews > Dashboard. If this is a fresh install you will see a friendly "not configured yet" state -- that is normal.

Updating later? New releases arrive through Joomla's own updater under System > Update > Extensions -- your settings, cache, and license key all survive the update. See Updates & Upgrades.

Next step

Connect your Google Business Profile so there are reviews to display: Connect Your Google Business Profile.

27:T820,

All Google setup lives in one place: Components > MuRu Reviews > Settings (the same values System > Global Configuration edits).

What to fill in

Review sources -- tick Google (and Manual reviews in Pro).
Google Place ID -- your Business Profile place ID. A finder link is built into Settings.
Google API key -- a Places API (New) key. Follow Google's setup guide to create one.
Display defaults -- layout, review count (0 = show everything cached), minimum rating, and show toggles.
Cache duration -- default 12 hours. The frontend always serves the cache, never Google directly.

Restrict your API key by IP address, not HTTP referrer. All Google calls run server-side, so a referrer restriction would block your own server.

Fetch your reviews

Back on the Dashboard, click Refresh Now. You should see your average rating, total count, and cached reviews. If the fetch fails, the Dashboard shows the API error inline.

Google shows a rating but no review texts? That is usually a Google-side state -- some profiles have rating-only reviews, or the key/project lacks review data. The Dashboard says so explicitly instead of blaming your filters.

Next step

Publish your reviews with a module, shortcode, menu item, or the SP Page Builder addon.

28:T57f,

MuRu Reviews turns the reviews you already earn into social proof on your own Joomla site. Reviews are fetched server-side, normalised, stored in a local file cache, and rendered as real HTML by four display paths: a module, a {murureviews} shortcode, a menu-item page, and an SP Page Builder addon.

How it works

A provider (Google, Trustpilot, Yelp, …) fetches reviews from the source's official API.
Each review is normalised into one shape and written to the cache.
Every display path reads the cache only and renders the same data - visitors never wait on an API.

Free and Pro

Free - Google Business Profile (one location), Cards / List / Basic carousel layouts, minimum-rating and count filters, all four display paths.
Pro - everything in Free plus Trustpilot, Facebook, Tripadvisor, Yelp, G2, JED, Capterra and manual reviews, multiple Google locations, an aggregated rating, eight more layouts, keyword / source / location / date filters and review moderation.

Pro installs over Free as a normal Joomla update and keeps your settings. If a Pro licence lapses, your site falls back to Free-level output - it never breaks a page.

29:T66a,

The bundle ships a native SP Page Builder addon, so page authors can drop reviews onto any SP page without touching modules or shortcodes. It renders the same cached data as every other path.

Use it

Enable the plugin: System > Manage > Plugins, search "MuRu Reviews", enable SP Page Builder - MuRu Reviews.
Configure Google once under Components > MuRu Reviews > Settings, then Refresh Now on the Dashboard.
Edit any SP page, open the addons panel, and add MuRu Reviews (Muru category; "MuRu Reviews (Pro)" in Pro).

Options

Layout -- Cards, List, Basic carousel. Pro adds Masonry, Testimonial, Badge.
Review count -- 0 to 50 (0 = all cached). Default 6.
Minimum rating -- Any, 3+, 4+, 5 only.
Show toggles -- rating summary, date, avatar, source.
Keyword / Source filter -- Pro only.
Custom CSS class -- for your own styling hooks.

The editor preview updates live as you edit. If the component or API key is missing, the addon shows a muted placeholder instead of breaking the page -- and Pro-only picks on Free safely fall back to Cards.

Customizing the addon output? Override it under templates/<your-template>/sppagebuilder/addons/murureviews/ -- never edit the plugin itself, or updates will wipe your changes.

2a:T591,

Every display path -- module, shortcode, menu page, SP Page Builder addon -- offers the same layouts and filters. Pick per placement: a Cards grid on the homepage, a compact List in the sidebar.

Layouts

Cards (Free) -- responsive grid of review cards.
List (Free) -- compact stacked rows for narrow columns.
Basic carousel (Free) -- dependency-free slider with prev/next arrows and dots.
Masonry (Pro) -- staggered grid that fits reviews of any length.
Testimonial (Pro) -- large-quote spotlight, one review at a time.
Badge (Pro) -- compact trust badge with your score and count.

Star ratings paint per-star gold/gray SVG fills -- a 4.8 shows four full stars plus a partial one -- while the exact value stays in the aria-label for screen readers and search engines.

Filters

Minimum rating + count (Free) -- e.g. only 4+ stars, capped at 6 reviews. 0 means "no limit".
Keyword + source (Pro) -- search review text, or narrow to google/manual reviews.

In Free, Pro layouts and filters stay visible but disabled with a (Pro) label wherever they can be picked -- discoverable, never hidden.

2b:T4e2,

Free

Cards - responsive grid; the homepage classic.
List - compact rows for sidebars and footers.
Basic carousel - one review at a time with arrows and dots (vanilla JS).

Pro

Masonry - staggered columns for reviews of any length.
Slider - several cards in a swipeable row with scroll-snap, buttons and keyboard arrows.
Testimonial - large single-column quotes.
Badge - compact trust badge with the top review and count.
Minimal - borderless pull-quotes with an accent rule.
Dark - the whole widget on a dark surface.
Summary - star-distribution bars across all matching reviews, no cards.
Wall of love - dense compact masonry for many short reviews.

Styling is scoped under .murureviews-root and uses CSS variables (--muru-star, --muru-radius, …), so you can adapt colours to your template without touching the extension.

2c:T45a,

MuRu Reviews is fast by architecture: the frontend only ever reads the local file cache. Google is contacted server-side when you refresh -- visitors never wait on an API, and no visitor data is sent to Google.

How refreshing works

Refresh Now (Dashboard) refetches from your ticked sources. Cached-vs-total counts show exactly what is stored.
Clear Cache empties it.
Cache duration options: 1h, 6h, 12h (default), 24h, or 7 days.

Why pages stay fast

Dependency-free markup and CSS; the carousel is vanilla JS. No CDN scripts, fonts, or images -- ever.
Reviewer avatars lazy-load with an initials fallback, never blocking rendering.
Reviews render as real crawlable HTML with structured-data basics, readable by search engines.

Automatic scheduled refresh is on the Pro roadmap. Until then, set a generous TTL and hit Refresh Now whenever new Google reviews matter -- the cache makes refreshes cheap.

2d:T4d5,

Free covers Google reviews end to end: connect your Business Profile and show reviews anywhere. Pro adds your own reviews, more layouts, and smart filters -- and grows toward an all-sources review wall.

What Pro adds in 1.0

Manual / custom reviews -- paste testimonials as JSON (sample file included); they merge with Google reviews under one combined score.
Masonry, Testimonial, Badge layouts -- on all four display paths.
Keyword + source filters -- on all four display paths.

Licensing

Paste your key under Settings > License and Activate. The Dashboard badges licensed installs. If a Pro license expires, your site keeps showing Free-level output -- Google reviews on all four paths keep working -- and your manual reviews and settings stay saved for reactivation.

On the roadmap for Pro: multiple Google locations, Trustpilot + JED connectors, more layouts, moderation, scheduled refresh, and review-request tools. Track it on the Changelog & Roadmap page.

2e:T426,

MuRu Reviews updates through Joomla's own updater -- no separate download visits, no manual file merges.

Update

Go to System > Update > Extensions.
Free and Pro each register their own update feed, so the right release appears automatically. Pro feeds carry your license download ID.

Updating (or reinstalling over the current version) never deletes saved data: Place ID, API key, display defaults, manual reviews, license key, and the review cache all survive.

Upgrade Free to Pro

Install the Pro bundle over Free as a normal update -- same element names, settings carried across untouched. Then paste your key under Settings > License and Activate.

Uninstall

System > Manage > Extensions, filter "MuRu", select the package (or pieces) and Uninstall. This removes files, database rows, and the saved configuration -- a full uninstall is the one operation that clears settings, which is standard Joomla behavior.

2f:T5b1,

MuRu Reviews explains every state instead of showing blank areas. Find your message below.

"Not configured yet"

You haven't saved a Place ID + API key, or the cache is empty. Fill in Settings and hit Refresh Now on the Dashboard.

API error on refresh

The Dashboard shows Google's error inline. Usual causes: API key without the Places API (New) enabled, a wrong Place ID, or billing not enabled on the Google Cloud project. Fix it there and refresh again.

Rating shown, but no review texts

Not a bug: some profiles have rating-only reviews, or the key/project lacks review data. The Dashboard states this explicitly. Nothing in your filters can fix a Google-side absence.

"No reviews match the current filters"

Your minimum rating, count, keyword, or source filter excludes everything cached. Loosen one control (or pass 0 / empty) and check again.

Pro features locked after activating

Open Settings > License and read the status line -- it names the exact verdict (expired, revoked, wrong product, site limit). Reactivating re-checks against the store.

Still stuck? Reach us via the contact page with your Joomla version, extension version, and the exact Dashboard message -- that trio answers most cases immediately.

30:T473,

Neither the Joomla Extensions Directory nor Capterra publishes a public reviews API, and MuRu Reviews never scrapes. Instead, paste the reviews of your own listing - the ones you are entitled to display - as JSON in Settings → Joomla Extensions Directory (JED) or Settings → Capterra.

[
  {

  }
]

Only author_name or content plus rating (0-5) are required. url must start with https://. The optional listing URL field is used for the attribution link.

Click Download a sample file under the manual reviews field for a ready-made template.

These reviews appear with the right source badge and join the aggregated rating. Invalid JSON only skips that source; the refresh reports it as a warning.

Do I need SP Page Builder?

No - only for the page-builder addon.

Which sources can I combine?

In Pro, all of them at once: Google (several locations), Trustpilot, Facebook, Tripadvisor, Yelp, G2, JED, Capterra and manual reviews.

Can I show only my best reviews?

Yes: minimum rating and count on every path; in Pro also keyword, source, location and date filters, plus Hide for individual reviews.

Will it slow my site?

No. Pages read a local cache and the output is dependency-free HTML and CSS.

What happens if my Pro licence expires?

Your site keeps showing Free-level output (Google on all four paths). Settings and credentials are kept and everything returns when the licence is active again.
